Today the President of the Republic, H.E. Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu received the European Union’s Ambassador to the Republic of Zambia and COMESA, H.E. Jacek Jankowski together with the Ambassadors of EU Member States (Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Sweden). The meeting was a follow-up to the recent Zambia-EU political dialogue held at ministerial level.

The EU Ambassadors seized this occasion to announce that the European Union will deploy an Election Observation Mission to Zambia. Ambassador Jankowski explained: “The EU Election Observation Mission, scheduled to deploy in early July, will be a highly visible demonstration of the European Union’s commitment to supporting democracy and the respect for Human rights in Zambia. Its immediate goals are to help build trust and confidence in the elections, deter fraud and provide an informed and factual assessment of the electoral process”.The EU and its Member States support Zambia’s electoral process with the goal that the upcoming elections in August can take place in a peaceful manner, with a level playing field for all candidates and with citizens able to express freely their choice through the ballot box. “Only transparent, credible and inclusive elections allow for a peaceful continuation of power or for a peaceful transition of power, depending on the will of the Zambian people. The Zambian people, proud of their historic struggle for democracy, deserve no less”, said Ambassador Jacek Jankowski.

Other issues that the EU Ambassadors raised in their meeting with H.E. President Lungu included the COVID-19 vaccination campaign, Zambia’s economic and financial situation, the situation in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province and the future of the Zambia-EU partnership
