to the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy
Rule 138
Nikolaj Villumsen (The Left)

Subject: The violation of human rights in the Kurdish Region of Iraq

In December 2020, peaceful protests in the Kurdish Region of Iraq were violently repressed by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), resulting in seven dead and 65 injured, including children.

In addition, the KRG has arrested approximately 500 protesters and journalists of different nationalities and has restricted access to the internet.

The above constitute serious limitations and violations of fundamental human rights.

What will the Vice‑President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy do to secure freedom of speech, fundamental human rights, the release of those imprisoned, and democratic development in the Kurdish Region of Iraq?
