Subject: Taking account of technological developments in the draft directive on a universal charger
Every year, 50 million tonnes of electronic waste are produced worldwide. Reducing this waste and putting in place measures to encourage businesses to repair damaged items, rather than replacing them with new ones, is necessary in order to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal. Over the past decade, the difference in the types of chargers produced has decreased considerably. At present there are three types of chargers (USB-C, USB-micro-B and lightning), and the development of wireless chargers will significantly reduce the importance of wired chargers in the years ahead.
1. How does the Commission intend to take account of this technological development in its draft directive?
2. Will it propose measures to ensure that different wireless charges work as well as possible with different mobile radio devices?
