Subject: Results of the report of the Joint Research Centre on the variable quality of products offered by the same producers on the single market

A report of the Joint Research Centre(1) presenting the results of a comparison of the quality characteristics and composition of branded food products sold in the European Union found that there is still an issue of variable quality of many products on the single market. The research mentioned in the report concerned food, but, according to public opinion, the issue of offering products of inferior quality in certain Member States also affects cosmetics, beauty products and cleaning products.

  1. Does the European Commission intend to carry out similar analyses and research to check the scale of the problem of variable quality in terms of cosmetics, beauty products and cleaning products offered by the same producers in different Member States?
  2. What consequences does the Commission plan to introduce for companies that, according to the Joint Research Centre report, apply unfair commercial practices, offering products of inferior quality and inferior composition in certain Member States?
  3. How does the Commission rate the information exchange system with national consumer protection and food safety bodies in relation to products that breach European standards, and how effectively does collaboration between European and national institutions allow for the identification of cases of variable quality of products offered by the same producers on the single market?
