Subject: Need for the EU to issue a digital currency

New socio-economic data, rapid changes in the financial sector, the digital transition, the growing demand for cryptocurrencies and the surge in the price of Bitcoin make the need for a European digital currency more pressing.

It is worth remembering that the EU was the first to create a different, non-traditional currency with the introduction of the European Currency Unit (ECU), the precursor to the euro.

I believe that the time is right for the EU to respond to this need and, first and foremost, for the Commission, the Council and Parliament to take a political decision in favour of a European digital currency.

In the light of the above:

  1. Does the Commission intend to design and study the creation of a European digital currency?
  2. What is the Commission’s reaction to the growing influence of Bitcoin?
  3. What is the Commission’s advice to European citizens concerning the growing influence of Bitcoin?
