Question for written answer E-002606/2021

to the Commission

Rule 138

Niels Fuglsang (S&D)

Subject: Level of resources for Commission monitoring of compliance with EU sanctions

In October 2019, I submitted a question to the Commission’s High Representative concerning the existing tools for monitoring compliance by European companies and Member States with EU sanctions and what is needed to ensure that the Commission has the powers to verify this compliance.(1)

At that time, Commission Vice-President Mogherini replied that the then new Commission ‘will place focus on the application and enforcement of EC law and in that context will provide support and continuous guidance to Member States on implementation of restrictive measures to guarantee the effectiveness of the EU sanctions regimes’.(2) Will the Commission now indicate, 18 months later, what precise measures have been taken to ensure monitoring of the EU sanctions regimes, including the number of staff employed? Will the Commission also state what resources DG FISMA has been given for monitoring operations since the sanctions unit moved there from the FPI on 1 January 2020?(3)
