Subject: Increase in exports to the EU of fisheries products from Western Sahara in 2019

In the 2020 report on the benefits for the people of Western Sahara of extending EU tariff preferences to products from the territory, it is pointed out that fisheries exports increased to 124 000 tonnes in 2019. That is a 127% increase on the 54 637 tonnes exported in 2016. Exports of fisheries products from Western Sahara in 2015 amounted to 44 891 tonnes.

  1. Can the Commission explain why there has been such a large increase in fisheries exports from Western Sahara?
  2. Does the increase in exports reflect an increase in catches?
  3. Does the increase have any impact on the activities of European fishers?
