Subject: Censorship and interference by Twitter in the regional elections in Catalonia
On 28 January 2020, Twitter censored VOX – my political party and the third-strongest political force in Spain – just a day before the launch of the regional election campaign in Catalonia.
This censorship of the freedom of expression – a fundamental right – by foreign internet service providers, and by Twitter in particular, has already been criticised by European leaders, including the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and by members of the Commission, including its President, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton.
Given the seriousness and urgent nature of the situation:
- What steps is the Commission going to take to prevent the censorship by Twitter and other foreign-owned service providers of freely expressed opinions in Europe?
- What steps is the Commission going to take to prevent foreign multinationals from interfering in and poisoning electoral processes in the EU?
