In the spirit of ‘Team Europe’, the European Union in Egypt, the Embassy of Germany in Cairo and the European Investment Bank provide support to over 2000 Egyptian families in Qena, Sohag, and Kafr El-sheikh governorates. The ‘Team Europe’ solidarity initiative is coinciding with Europe Day celebrations, celebrated annually on 09 May. The initiative is conducted in cooperation with ‘Misr El Kheir’ Foundation, through distributing ‘Solidarity boxes’ filled with basic sustenance needs during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Cairo, 08 May 2021- Ambassador Christian Berger, Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt (EU), said: “This initiative comes from our hearts and with a deep feeling of solidarity with the most deserving families. Especially in the month of Ramadan this collaboration echoes the Team Europe spirit and the wish to alleviate the immediate social and economic repercussions of the COVID19 pandemic.”
German Ambassador in Cairo, Mr. Cyrill Nunn also made a statement: “We have been living with the pandemic and its strains for more than a year now, and the hardship turns out even greater for the most vulnerable among us.” His Excellency elaborated: “We are happy to partner up with the EU, the EIB and others to support hundreds of families. It is much more than just helping with food supply; it is also a message that people who feel marginalized are not forgotten.
On his part, Head of the European Investment Bank (EIB) – Cairo office, Mr. Alfredo Abad said: “Supporting entrepreneurship, building capacities of youth & women, and financing social infrastructure are at the heart of EIB’s activities worldwide.” He elaborated, “Being the lending arm of the European Union, the EIB is supporting the Egyptian population by financing projects that achieve sustainable development. In addition, and as part of Team Europe, we are taking part in distributing solidarity boxes to show appreciation to the most vulnerable members of community.”
On Misr Al Kheir Foundation’s part, Mr. Mohamed Abdel-Rahman, Deputy Managing Director stated: “Our cooperation with the European Union is long-standing, and we thank them for participating in our campaign to provide the solidarity food boxes. It is important that big entities cooperate with civil society institutions to support the most deserving societies” He added “Misr El-Kheir Foundation has been able to provide more than 95 million services to deserving families in 6 main areas: education, health, social solidarity, scientific research, and integrated development. We hope to be able to do more in the future.”
It is also worth mentioning that the ‘Team Europe’ initiative is supporting partner countries around the world to ease the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Here in Egypt, it is an integral part of our broader cooperation framework and the support through international initiatives like COVAX that provides vaccines to our partners.
