16 Jul: Slovenian Presidency debriefs EP committees on priorities

Ministers outlined the priorities of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU to parliamentary committees, in a series of meetings.

Slovenia holds the Presidency of the Council until the end of 2021. The hearings took place between 12 and 15 July.


On 12 July, Agriculture, Forestry and Food Minister Jože Podgoršek told the Fisheries Committee that the Presidency will strive to make fisheries and aquaculture sectors more sustainable. They will focus on small-scale coastal fisheries, the revision of the fisheries control system, as well as negotiations on fishing opportunities for 2022.

The European Economic and Social Committee welcomes the priorities of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council and declares that it will cooperate closely with Ljubljana to help turn them into a reality. MEPs discussed the planned activities of the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU with Prime Minister Janez Janša and Commission President von der Leyen.

Prime Minister Janša recalled the various crises that the EU has experienced over the last few years, ranging from financial issues, to migration, Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic, all of which has forced the European Union to be more strategic and focus on foreign policy.

Thank you very much Prime Minister,

Indeed, the beginning of a new Presidency is always a very special moment. Slovenia is taking the helm of Europe’s leadership at a turning point for our Union. Our vaccination campaign is progressing fast. The European Union is cautiously reopening, we are shifting now from crisis management to long-term recovery efforts.
