Mr President, Honourable Members,

I am very happy to have this opportunity to address the plenary of the European Parliament and to use it as a chambre de resonance all over the world to talk about an issue like the situation in Nicaragua. Thank you for putting that on the agenda and for giving me the opportunity to comment with you not only the effects, but also the feelings about the situation there.

Mr President, talking about Nicaragua, being a Spaniard and being Nicaragua a Spanish-speaking country allow me to speak in Spanish.

30 Aug: Declaration by the High Representative on behalf of the EU on the alignment of certain countries concerning restrictive measures regarding Nicaragua

On 30 July 2021, the Council adopted Decision (CFSP) 2020/12781.

The Council decided that eight persons should be included in the list of natural and legal persons, entities and bodies subject to restrictive measures set out in the Annex to Decision (CFSP) 2019/1720.

The Candidate Countries the Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Albania2, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and Georgia align themselves with this Council Decision.

09 Aug: Nicaragua: Statement by the High Representative Josep Borrell on developments ahead of the November elections

President of Nicaragua Daniel Ortega and Vice-president Rosario Murillo want to win the elections without competition. Their decision, implemented by the Supreme Electoral Council, on 6 August to strip the last remaining political opposition party of its legal personality ahead of the general elections in November crushes the prospects of a credible and legitimate electoral process. The opposition has been eliminated. Nicaraguans are being deprived of the basic human and civil right to vote in a credible, inclusive and transparent election in line with Nicaragua’s Constitution and international human rights laws and standards.

02 Aug: Nicaragua: EU imposes sanctions on eight more individuals

The Council has imposed restrictive measures on eight more individuals responsible for serious human rights violations in Nicaragua and/or whose actions undermined democracy or the rule of law, including Vice-President Rosario Murillo. These measures are targeted at individuals and are designed in this way not to harm the Nicaraguan population or the Nicaraguan economy.

MEPs condemn restrictive laws devised to criminalise political opponents in Nicaragua and call for all arbitrarily detained political prisoners to be immediately released.

In a resolution adopted on Thursday, MEPs strongly condemn all the Nicaraguan authorities’ repressive actions, in particular the deaths caused, against democratic opposition parties and other opponents of the regime.
