24 Sep: Sakharov Prize 2021: Parliament to announce candidates

MEPs will be presented with the nominees for this year’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in a joint committee meeting on Monday afternoon.

MEPs from the Foreign Affairs Committee, Development Committee and Subcommittee on Human Rights will meet to assess the nominees put forward for this year’s Sakharov Prize. Nominations for the annual award can be made by a political group or by at least 40 MEPs.

Over the last decade, Parliament has urged the Commission to table a proposal on a common charger to tackle e-waste and make life easier for consumers.

The European Parliament and its Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee have been insisting on a common charger solution for years, continuously asking the Commission to act through a series of own-initiative reports, resolutions, and questions addressed to Commissioners.

In 2014, Parliament strongly advocated for a common charger for all mobile phones during the negotiations of the Radio Equipment Directive (RED).

EU ambassadors today endorsed a political agreement with the European Parliament on a proposal that fills a gap in legislation and ensures that member states can continue to employ holders of third-country certificates in the inland navigation sector.
