20 Jan: CONSULTATIONS: Chemicals legislation – revision of REACH Regulation to help achieve a toxic-free environment

Deadline: 15-04-2022

(Source: European Commission)

Summary

The European Green Deal sets out the ambition to reach zero pollution for a toxic-free environment.

As part of this ambition, the chemicals strategy for sustainability announces actions to better protect people and the environment against hazardous chemicals and to encourage innovation to develop safe and sustainable alternatives.

Achieving these goals requires revising the rules governing the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals in the EU.

30 Nov: CONSULTATIONS: Microplastics pollution – measures to reduce its impact on the environment

Deadline: 28-12-2021

(Source: European Commission)

Summary

This initiative aims to tackle microplastics unintentionally released into the environment. It will focus on labelling, standardisation, certification and regulatory measures for the main sources of these plastics.

It aims to:

improve the science on the risks and occurrence of microplastics in the environment, tap water and foodreduce environmental pollution and potential health risks, while respecting the principles of the single market and encouraging competitiveness and innovation.

29 Nov: CONSULTATIONS: Environmental Liability Directive (evaluation)

Deadline: 27-12-2021

(Source: European Commission)

Summary

The Environmental Liability Directive establishes a framework based on the ‘polluter pays’ principle to prevent and remedy environmental damage.

This evaluation will assess whether the Directive is fit for purpose and any shortcomings it may have. It will also reflect on calls from the European Parliament and the European Court of Auditors to strengthen its application.

24 Nov: CONSULTATIONS: Chemicals – simplification and digitalisation of labelling requirements

Deadline: 16-02-2022

(Source: European Commission)

Summary

The EU aims to improve the communication of essential information on chemicals and in so doing reduce hazardous chemicals’ adverse effects on health and the environment.

To contribute to these goals, this initiative will consider simplifying and streamlining labelling requirements for some categories of chemicals and chemical products, and the use of digital labelling.

The initiative also sets out to increase the cost-effectiveness and overall competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry.

19 Nov: CONSULTATIONS: Waste shipments – revision of EU rules

Deadline: 14-01-2022

(Source: European Commission)

Summary

Waste transport can involve hazardous materials that are harmful to human health and the environment. The EU therefore has rules in place on waste shipments (Regulation 1013/2006).

As announced in the European Green Deal, the Commission intends to review the EU rules on waste shipments. The purpose of this review is to ensure how to facilitate that EU policy on waste shipments promotes recycling in the EU to support the transition to the circular economy. The review will also explore ways to reduce the export of waste, for example through:

16 Nov: CONSULTATIONS: Updating the list of invasive alien species threatening biodiversity and ecosystems across the EU

Deadline: 14-12-2021

(Source: European Commission)

Summary

Invasive alien species are animals and plants that are introduced accidentally or deliberately into a natural environment where they are not normally found, with serious negative consequences for their new environment.

The EU maintains a list of ‘invasive alien species of Union concern’, for which the EU countries must take coordinated action to manage/prevent their introduction/spread.

This initiative adds new species to the list.

08 Nov: CONSULTATIONS: Persistent organic pollutants – setting limit values in Annex I (update)

Deadline: 06-12-2021

(Source: European Commission)

Summary

EU rules implement the EU’s international commitments under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (chemical substances). Hexachlorobenzene, a substance used in pesticides, is listed in Annex A to the Stockholm Convention (elimination) and in Annex I to EU Regulation 2019/1021.

This initiative amends Annex I which currently does not set a limit value for the presence of hexachlorobenzene as unintentional trace contaminant in substances, mixtures and articles.

28 Oct: CONSULTATIONS: Hazardous waste – updated concentration limits for chemical pollutants

Deadline: 23-12-2021

(Source: European Commission)

Summary

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are poisonous chemicals that break down slowly and get into the food chain, harming the environment and our health.

Waste that contains POPs is a particular concern. The EU therefore sets concentration limits for these chemicals, which it reviews regularly to reflect the latest research.

With this initiative, the Commission is once again reviewing the limits to:

ensure that such waste is managed in an environmentally sound wayachieve safer recycling.
