“Check against delivery”

Dear Platform Members,

Let me start by expressing my sincere appreciation to you all for your presence here today.

I could not be with you because of prior commitments, but I am delighted that some of you are meeting in person, for the first time in two years.

I would therefore like to warmly welcome you all, at the 11th EU Platform on animal welfare from wherever you may be joining today.

Your meeting takes place at a crucial time for animal welfare.

This is reflected in the packed agenda before us today but, most importantly, in the tasks that lie ahead of us over the next two years.

The most important and challenging of these, is our ambition to reform and strengthen our animal welfare legislation, which we want to propose by the end of next year, as we have committed and planned to do, under our Farm to Fork Strategy.

Your six thematic subgroups have been working around the clock to make sure we can stick to this timetable.

I’m therefore very glad that their work will be presented and debated today.

Your investment and dedication will pay off!

Alongside this, the Commission will present the main results of the online public consultation on the fitness check and revision of the legislation.

In addition, an important overview report on the use of animal welfare indicators at farm level will be presented as well, which will surely give us food for thought about including a more solid system of indicators in the new legislation.

EFSA is also with us today to present its essential work which will underpin our science-based legislative proposals.

You’ll also have three studies to look at: one on animal welfare labelling and two on transport. I’m glad you’ll be discussing their findings, and the lessons to draw from them for our legislative proposals.

Last but not least, the leaders of the voluntary initiative on pets and on horses will report on their work. I’m sure that, like me, you deeply appreciate what they’re doing, as it contributes to better animal welfare.

Dear friends,

As I said, there’s a lot to get through today. So, all that remains is for me to thank you once again for your hard work, dedication and commitment, and to wish you all a very fruitful meeting!
