The EU strongly condemns the attack on the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia’s (ATMIS) operating base in the area of El-Baraf town in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region on 3 May 2022 which resulted in the death and injury of a number of peacekeepers from Burundi as well as a several Somali citizens.

The EU expresses its condolences to the families of the victims and to the people of Burundi and Somalia, as well as to the African Union.

Today, the people of Somalia would not be enjoying the ability to deliberate and vote on their future if it were not for the sacrifices of the young African men and women who constitute ATMIS.

The EU would also like to express its deep appreciation to ATMIS’s troop and police contributing countries for their continued support in the fight against terror.
