Remarks by President Charles Michel after his meeting in Helsinki with Prime Minister of Finland Sanna Marin

(Source: Council of the EU and European Council)

First, I would like to thank you, dear Prime Minister, dear Sanna (Marin).

It is a great pleasure and honour for me to have this opportunity to meet you today in your country.

My goal with my presence here is to express our full support for your decision, supported by the people of Finland, to apply to become a NATO member. This is extremely important for the future of Finland and for the future of Europe. It will make Finland and Europe safer and stronger. It is also important for the transatlantic alliance.

We will also prepare for the next European Council meeting. It is very important to reiterate our full support for Ukraine. We will discuss how we can provide more financial support to Ukraine, so they have the liquidity to run the country. We will also start to discuss the rebuilding of Ukraine. We need to make sure that we demonstrate our concrete solidarity, and we will also address some challenges that we all face together.

Energy is an extremely important topic, as is food security. These are major challenges for all of us. And it is also important to show our solidarity with developing countries and to take concrete measures to help them and to support them.

Finally, defence will also be on the agenda for the European Council. We feel how important it is to strengthen our common capabilities.  We will also have the opportunity to take some concrete steps, and to task the Commission and the Council of the EU to take further steps in this important field.

This is a historic moment for Finland, a historic moment for the European Union. Russia decided to launch a war against Ukraine, and we have decided to be strong, to be powerful and to express our full unity. Thank you.
