On 29 June 2021, the Portuguese Assembleia da República, with the support of the European Parliament and the House of Representatives of the United States of America, presents a shared reflection on the importance of transatlantic dialogue for the defence of democracy. The discussion looks at the role of Parliaments in strengthening democratic mechanisms, as well as the challenges facing representative democracies. The event is organised as part of the Parliamentary Dimension of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The event is introduced by opening speeches from the President of the Assembleia da República, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, and the President of the European Parliament, David Maria Sassoli. It then focuses on a dialogue between the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America, Nancy Pelosi, and Congressman Jim Costa, who is of Portuguese heritage and Co-Chair of the Transatlantic Legislators Dialogue initiative. This has brought together European and American legislators since 1972, with the aim of maintaining permanent cooperation and dialogue across the Atlantic.

This interparliamentary reflection is an opportunity to discuss the democratic values and principles that unite the European Union, its Member States, and the United States of America. Each speech will reflect on the challenges facing democracies on both sides of the Atlantic and across the globe in an age of increasing authoritarianism.
