EUROPEAN UNION SUPPORTS DIALOGUE BETWEEN EUROPEAN AND BRAZILIAN CITIES TO IMPROVE PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Ignacio Ybáñez, Ambassador of the European Union to Brazil, participated today in the launching event of the Guide of Best Practices in public policies in the field of urban mobility, organized by the “Frente Nacional de Prefeitos”, under the auspices of the “AcessoCidades: cidades mais acessíveis e conectadas” project and in cooperation with the “Associazione Nazionale dei Comuni Italiani” from Italy and the “Confederación de Fondos de Cooperación y Solidaridad “ from Spain.

In his speech, he stressed the close, excellent and important cooperation between the European Union and Brazil in questions of sustainable urban infrastructure development and policies.

In the launching of the Guide of Best Practices in public policies in the field of urban mobility, also the Secretary of Urban Mobility of Porto Alegre, Adão de Castro Junior, participated. The presentation highlighted successful examples, like the survey in the city of Recife, a plan to promote pedestrian safety in the city of Fortaleza or the City Bus 2.0 project in Goiania.

Additionally, two public policies were presented during the event:

  • “Bilbao30”, presented by the Director of Mobility and Sustainability of the city of Bilbao, Spain, Mr. Ignacio Alday. The public policy established the speed limit of 30 km-hour in the streets of Bilbao, in order to improve safety and reduce environmental impact related to pollution.
  • “Bora de Graça”, in Caucaia, Brazil, presented by Mayor Vitor Valim. This initiative established the free of charge public transport for the city’s population. Caucaia is the largest Brazilian city to implement the “tarifa zero” policy.

In his speech, Ambassador Ybáñez emphasized the excellent cooperation with the “Frente Nacional de Prefeitos” in partnership with the “Associazione Nazionale dei Comuni Italiani” from Italy and the “Confederación de Fondos de Cooperación y Solidaridad” from Spain to implement this initiative. He underlined the importance of a close partnership between Brazilian and European cities in the field of sustainable solutions in the area of urban mobility development and infrastructure and thanked all those that have contributed to the success of the project.
