Europe Day was observed on Monday, May 9, 2022 at the EU Residence in Windhoek, Namibia. Celebrated under the theme “United for Peace,” the event highlighted the role of young people vocally engaging for peace in Namibia, Europe and Worldwide. It is no coincidence that 2022 is the “European Year of Youth.”

Hon. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Namibia, delivered the keynote address. In her address, she congratulated the EU and the people of Europe on the remembrance of the historic Schumnan declaration, which was based on its vision, innovative, and pioneering efforts. Speaking on youth unemployment, she said, “Government’s internship policy has been revised to ensure increased opportunities for internships, with 2 percent of the positions in the public service reserved for interns. Moreover, about 62 percent of the public service positions do not require any prior work experience.”

EU Ambassador to Namibia, H.E. Sinikka Antila also spoke at the event. She said, “I am convinced that the longstanding EU-Namibian partnership will manage to bring about fruitful outcomes of this re-imagining work. We are planning to organize EU-Namibia Business Forum towards the end of this year and I am calling for EU-Namibia business and investment partnerships to become part of this reimagining for sustainable, green, inclusive economic growth.”
