EIB’s statement concerning 23/5/2021 events in Belarus

In line with the European Council, the European Investment Bank condemns the actions by the Belarus government leading to the forced landing in Minsk of a commercial flight on 23 May and the arrest of two of its passengers, Roman Protasevich, a journalist from Belarus, and Sofia Sapega, his partner. We join EU leaders in calling for their immediate release.

The EIB has been observing developments in Belarus with great concern over the past year.

The EIB stopped activity in Belarus since the country’s presidential elections and will continue to maintain the same stance in line with EU policy.
