28 Sep: Keynote speech by the Eurogroup President, Paschal Donohoe, at New Economics Foundation conference, 28 September 2021

(Source: Council of the EU and European Council)

Good morning and thanks to the organising committee – New Economics Foundation and Finance Watch – for the invitation to speak today.

It is a privilege and a key part of my job as President of Eurogroup to attend and speak at these events and I hope your deliberations go well.

Ideally, I would have liked to have participated “live” but this period is exceptionally busy as a result of both domestic and European work. This includes preparations for the upcoming Irish Budget and of course next week’s Eurogroup meeting.

For today, …

19 Jul: Statement by President Charles Michel on developments in Georgia

(Source: European Council)

Today I visited Georgia to attend the Batumi International Conference and a meeting with leaders of the EU’s Associated partners – Georgia, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.

On this occasion, I also had the opportunity to meet President Zourabichvili, Prime Minister Garibashvili and leaders of Georgia’s parliamentary opposition parties to discuss the latest developments in Georgia and the implementation of the 19 April Agreement.

My single most important message to all political parties in Georgia is that the full implementation of the 19 April Agreement remains the best guarantee to advance Georgia’s democratic agenda in the …

(Source: Council of the EU)

26 Jun: Speech by President Charles Michel at the Statehood Day ceremony in Ljubljana

21 Jun: Opening remarks by Paschal Donohoe at the European Parliament’s ECON Committee, 21 June 2021

(Source: Eurogroup)

(check against delivery)

Thank you for inviting me for another economic dialogue. It is a pleasure to appear again before the ECON Committee. I look forward to exchanging views over the next hour or so.

In my introductory remarks, I will report on the main issues the Eurogroup has been working on in the past few months, and on its policy priorities going forward.

Economic outlook

Since we last met, the economic outlook for the euro area has markedly improved. Recent forecasts of international institutions, including the European Commission’s Spring Forecast, foresee a strong rebound of economic activity …

10 Jun: Remarks by President Charles Michel ahead of the G7 summit, 11-13 June 2021

(Source: European Council)

31 May: “A New Deal for Africa” – Op-ed article by President Charles Michel, and more than 30 European and African leaders

(Source: European Council)

In one year, the pandemic has halted a quarter-century of steady economic growth in Africa, disrupted value chains, and caused an unprecedented increase in inequality and poverty. As a result, the entire world is at risk, because the global economy could lose one of its future drivers of growth.

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us that we can no longer treat seemingly faraway crises as distant problems. What happens anywhere can affect people everywhere. That is why addressing the impact and legacy of the pandemic in Africa is so important.

Although Africa has suffered fewer COVID-19 cases …

“Check against delivery”

Ladies and gentlemen,

Over the past weeks, vaccination is really starting to pick up the pace across the EU. The numbers speak for themselves. Last week we saw more than 34 million doses delivered – a record in deliveries until now. By now we have passed the milestone of 200 million deliveries in the EU.

At present, over 30% of the EU adult population has received a first dose and for the second dose we have reached 12%. In every Member State, large and small, vaccination centres are mobilised, citizens are being vaccinated, and the …

“Check against delivery”

I am very honoured that you invited me to this very important conference where everyone who works on countering disinformation and foreign interference should be.

I remember after learning that I will deal with countering disinformation one of my first thoughts were: “I have to go to Riga to see the ‘NATO people’ and the Latvian authorities; they know a thing or two about this issue.”

Clearly, the pandemic has affected my plans, but I believe soon the time will come I will be able to see many of you personally.

I want to talk …

06 May: Speech by President von der Leyen at the State of the Union conference of the European University Institute

Source: EU Consilium

Thank you so much President Dehousse,

Distinguished guests,

Dear friends,

It is an honour for me to open this 10th anniversary edition of the State of the Union conference. Indeed, every year, around Europe Day, Florence becomes the centre of our Union. And there could be no better place than Florence to celebrate this year’s Europe Day.

Florence is the city of Renaissance. The place where it all started: a new beginning of arts and science, after the great plague of the late Middle Ages. And from Florence, the spirit of the Renaissance spread to the rest of …
