Answer given by High Representative/Vice-President Borrell
on behalf of the European Commission
Promoting the respect of human rights, including freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, media freedom and the right to fair trial, is a central element in the EU’s engagement with the Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
At EU level, the Commission has been calling upon the authorities to undertake all possible efforts to ensure accountability for any human rights violations committed. In close coordination with EU Member States, the Commission has been regularly engaging with the KRG on those issues.
EU and Member States representatives in Erbil discussed these worrying human rights developments, including on media freedom and freedom of assembly, with KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on 20 April 2021, in particular in light of the December 2020 events. They encouraged the KRG to comply with international standards to ensure the respect of these fundamental freedoms. These issues will continue to be closely monitored.
