Answer to Written Question: Sponsorship of the Presidency of the Council of the EU by major corporations

(Source: European Parliament)

Member States holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union use this period to promote themselves and organise activities which do not fall within the institutional framework of the Council, such as cultural, touristic and scientific events, or informal meetings. Those activities, in which no decisions can be taken, are distinguished from meetings of the Council. They remain under the sole responsibility of the Member State concerned. Regarding the Member State holding the Presidency mentioned by the Honourable Member, the Council notes that the information on sponsorships is publicly available on that Presidency’s website[1].

The relevant preparatory body of the Council has discussed and approved guidance to be provided by the General Secretariat of the Council on best practice for the use of sponsorship for Member States holding Council Presidencies[2].
