Answer given by Mr Várhelyi

on behalf of the European Commission

(4.6.2021)

The joint trip of the President of the European Council and the President of the Commission to Ankara on 6 April 2021 followed the European Council meeting of 25 March 2021[1]. It was a timely opportunity to set out to the Turkish leadership the readiness of the EU to engage with Turkey in several areas in a phased, proportionate and reversible manner, provided that the current de-escalation is sustained, that Turkey engages constructively, and subject to the established conditionalities set out in previous European Council conclusions. The European Council will revert to this matter in June 2021.

During her visit to Ankara, the Commission President prioritised substance over matters of protocol. She instructed her team to take all appropriate measures to ensure that her rank and role in the external representation of the Union are properly reflected in such meetings, in line with the EU Treaties.
