The Commission has been informed by the managing authority of the programme “Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources” (POSEUR) of the steps taken by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) to tackle the ongoing coastal erosion of Figueira da Foz coastline. In particular, the managing authority of POSEUR has indeed approved EU support for a project submitted by the APA to combat erosion along the beaches between Cova-Gala and Lavos[1] with a total cost of EUR 14.6 million, out of which EUR 10.9 million support from the Cohesion Fund.

This project- which has not been implemented yet – corresponds to the one referred to by the Honourable Member amounting to EUR 19 million, which was the initial planned amount that has been subsequently modified to EUR 14.6 million.

Moreover, the managing authority of POSEUR also approved two other projects[2], already completed or under implementation, with a view to tackle the ongoing coastal erosion of the coastline of Figueira da Foz.

The Commission will continue to follow closely the situation.

[1] Operation POSEUR-02-1809-FC-000077Artificial beach feeding for the south coastal section in Figueira da Foz (Cova Gala – Costa de Lavos)”.

[2] These two projects are the following: Operation POSEUR-02-1809-FC-000060 “Reconstitution of the dune system in the south of Esporão N.º 5 da Cova Gala” for a total amount of EUR 471 thousand, out of which EUR 353 thousand from the Cohesion Fund. This project is already completed.

Operation POSEUR-02-1809-FC-000073 “Cabedelo urban rehabilitation area – 2nd phase – coastal and dune system protection and rehabilitation” for a total amount of EUR 2 million, out of which EUR 1.5 million from the Cohesion Fund. This project is being implemented.
