29 Apr: Sudan: Joint Press Statement by France, Germany, Norway, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the European Union on their visit to Khartoum

Senior officials from France, Germany, Norway, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the European Union have concluded a joint visit to Khartoum to show support for the people of Sudan and a civilian-led transition towards democracy.

On 28 April, the EU-US Task Force on Energy Security met in person in Washington to discuss implementation of the 25 March Joint Statement by Presidents Biden and von der Leyen.

The meeting, chaired by Amos Hochstein, US Senior Advisor for Energy Security, and Björn Seibert, Head of Cabinet of the European Commission President, reviewed progress on diversifying natural gas supplies to Europe and reducing Europe’s demand for natural gas. The discussion followed two recent Task Force convenings that included senior US and European Commission officials, representatives of EU Member States, and industry participants.

The Commission takes note of the resignation with immediate effect of the Executive Director of the European Border and Coastguard Agency (Frontex), Fabrice Leggeri.

As the most senior Deputy Executive Director of Frontex, Aija Kalnaja will deputise and assume the lead of the Agency with immediate effect. To ensure full continuity of the agency, the Commission will proceed quickly with recruitment and appointment of a new Executive Director.

It is a priority for the Commission to have in place a strong, effective, and well-functioning European Border and Coast Guard.

The President of the European Council is travelling to Alexandroupolis, Greece on Thursday May 3.

He was invited by Prime Minister Mitsotakis and will be joined by Prime Minister Petkov of Bulgaria, President Vucic of Serbia and Prime Minister Kovachevski of North Macedonia.

The European Committee of the Regions has called for the European Union to create a “vulnerability scoreboard” as part of efforts to increase the resilience of regions.
